FAMILY DEVOTIONAL

Serving God and Others Family Devotional | May 2024

Christ-like transformation can be visible when we serve others and their needs as we put our personal needs and dreams aside. When we are sensitive to God, he often leads us to others who are in need of some kind of help.

How do you define serving?

Who do you know that consistently demonstrates what “servant” means?

An article in Psychology Today mentions a study that discovered, regularly serving others results in a stronger purpose in life and leads to better mental and physical health. Do you agree/disagree? Why?

The Bible knows it to be true and describes the importance of serving from the beginning of the book to the end.

Read Philippians 2:1-4 1So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Since Jesus is the ultimate Servant and Savior what do you learn from these verses? (involves our mind, attitude and humility)

What are some examples of the way Jesus served people? (can you think of a healing or miracle that is an example)

When we serve we are becoming more like Jesus!

1 Peter 4:10 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

What are some of your gifts, skills and talents? How can you serve others using these?

Here are some ideas for ways you can help!

  • Ask your family members what they need help with; is there a chore, a room, a yard that needs something?
  • Volunteer at your church, or in a ministry; look around the buildings for ways to help.
  • What about in your neighborhood? School?
  • Write a “thank you” note to mom or dad, a first responder or a teacher…
  • Pray for someone and write them a card
  • Collect change in a jar and donate it to a ministry cause you like
  • Donate some old clothes, books or toys to a ministry that serves families in need
  • Take some cookies or flowers to a friend or neighbor
  • Let someone go ahead of you at the grocery store, while you’re there, collect some stray carts
  • What else can you think of?
